MILITARY SPOUSE EMPLOYMENT

FINDING A JOB

As we mentioned on our other Employment pages, many of those resources are also available to military spouses. That being said, there are LOTS of great resources out there specifically for YOU to help you get started on your path to employment!

The U.S. Department of Labor's Transition Employment Assistance for Military Spouses and Caregivers program offers no-cost virtual workshops for military spouses and caregivers to help them plan and prepare for their job search. Available classes include Mastering Resume Essentials, Career Credentials, Federal Hiring, Interview Skills, LinkedIn Profiles, Entrepreneurship, and more.

  • The Army is improving career and employment opportunities for military spouses through new programs and existing partnerships
  • Both the Army MWR Employment Readiness Program and Army Spouse Employment, Career and Education programs offer resources to help military families with their career plans and job search.
  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers educational and career counseling for veteran family members.
  • Hiring Our Heroes offers several programs and resources for military spouses, including professional development and networking programs, hiring fairs, the Career Spark resume builder for military spouses, and fellowship programs for veterans AND military spouses.
  • RecruitMilitary’s Military Spouse Resource Center offers job fairs, webinars/workshops, networking guidance, resume and interview help, and more for military spouses.
  • Going back to work after a long career break? Look for “returnship” programs and opportunities with potential employers. Research organizations that specifically help those returning to work. There are temporary, permanent and remote positions available. Some offer a free returning to work kit of information to help get started. Three places to start your search are iRelaunch, ReacHire, and Path Forward.
  • Most of the military community hiring fairs that we post about every week on our Soldier for Life social media channels are for service members, veterans, AND military spouses (or find them via our Get Hired page).

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

If you are a military spouse (or family member for that matter) with an interest in starting your own business, be sure to check out the resources we mention on our Own Your Own Business page – most of those resources cover MilSpouses, too!

RELOCATION & LICENSING

More than 30 percent of active duty military spouses require state-issued licenses for their careers. When they move to another state due to a PCS move, they often require a professional recertification or relicensure because each state has different requirements and certifications. Click below to find out more and learn some tips and resources that are available to military spouses.

  • In order to alleviate some of the challenges caused by the relicensing process, many states have implemented or are in the process of implementing license portability measures for military spouses including expedited applications, temporary licenses, or complete license recognition.
  • The U.S. Department of Labor’s Military Spouse Interstate License Recognition Options map shows state-by-state license recognition information, and CareerOneStop lists license requirements by state.
