REGULAR RETIREMENT CHECKLISTS

As you go through the retirement process, use these checklists to get tasks completed at each stage. If you start preparing for retirement less than 36 months before your intended retirement date, you must still start with the 24 - 36 months checklist and complete all tasks to catch up.

24 - 36 months from retirement

At this point, you may not be committed to retiring, or even have a retirement date in mind, but you should begin planning now. Take the advice of those who walked this path before you. It takes more time than you know.

18 - 24 months

This is the time to schedule some retirement planning classes, consider PCS options, think about terminal leave, do some financial planning, and research life insurance options.

12 - 18 months

Your dates are becoming more definite during this time. It is a time to plan ahead but also take care of items like medical and dental appointments, Survivor Benefit Plan research, and preparing for employment or education pursuits.

6 - 12 months

Retirement is less than a year away. This time will be spent submitting official paperwork, scheduling important appointments, finalizing terminal leave, and taking action on your employment search or education plans.

1 - 6 months

The focus is now almost all on your military retirement now. It is time to execute your plans for employment or education, medical appointments, house hunting, moving, and more.
