Social Security Benefits to Increase in 2019

Each year we announce the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Usually there is an increase in the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit amount people receive each month, starting the following January. By law, federal benefits increase when the cost of living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).

When the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in late 2017, it made big changes to the way taxes are calculated for most taxpayers, including retirees. Among those changes, according to the IRS, are new tax rates and brackets, an increased standard deduction, the elimination of personal exemptions and limited or discontinued deductions. As a result, many taxpayers may need to raise or lower the amount of tax they pay in during the year.

For retirees who receive a monthly retirement paycheck, this may mean changing the amount of federal income tax you have withheld.

Compare 2019 FEDVIP Dental, Vision Plans Ahead of Open Season

In 2019, dental and vision insurance plans for retirees and their families will be available through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). If you’re eligible, the first opportunity to enroll in a plan is during the Federal Benefits Open Season. This will take place from Nov. 12 to Dec. 10. Prepare for Federal Benefits Open Season now by reviewing the 2019 FEDVIP plan options and rates.

Retiree Dental and Vision Plan Changes Coming for 2019

What is happening?

On December 31, 2018, the Defense Health Agency’s TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP), administered by Delta Dental, will end. However, individuals currently enrolled in or eligible for TRDP will have the opportunity to enroll in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP)* during the Federal Benefits Open Season from November 12 through December 10, 2018.

Do you want to make enrollment changes to your or to a family member’s TRICARE health plan for 2019? Your chance is around the corner during TRICARE Open Season. However, if you want to keep your current health plan, you don’t need do anything during TRICARE Open Season. Your current health care coverage will continue automatically as long as you remain eligible. 

It’s Back! Exchange Offering Fee-Free Layaway For The Holidays

Budget-minded service members, families and retirees can kick off their holiday shopping early by taking advantage of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s fee-free layaway.

The Exchange will waive the $3 service fee for items of $25 or more–including toys and bikes— that are placed on layaway starting Sept. 1 and paid for by Dec. 24.
