Question

How does the IDES benefit service members?

Answer

The Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) benefits service members in a number of ways. It:

  • Guarantees service members receive a single set of physical disability examinations conducted according to VA examination protocols, along with disability ratings prepared by VA. This information is used by both the Department of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA)to ensure the earliest possible delivery of disability benefits.
  • Allows service members to file their VA claim before leaving military service so they continue to receive their military paycheck during the evaluation process.
  • Ensures service members establish a relationship with the VA prior to leaving the military for a smoother transition to VA Health and Veterans care.
  • Keeps service members and their families informed, making the significant life event of transitioning to Veteran status a little easier.
This IDES brochure provides an overview of the evaluation timeline.
