Hiring Our Heroes Is An Honr

Social Security protects all Americans. We are especially proud of our commitment to provide high quality service and support to the men and women who proudly served, and are serving, our country.

Social Security expedites medical decisionsat all levels for Wounded Warriors and Veterans who have a 100 percent Permanent and Total rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). While we provide disability benefits because of their medical condition, we are also there when their military career comes to an end, offering them access to meaningful employment. We offer Veterans an opportunity to continue serving the American people after they transition to civilian life.Performing military service helps an individual develop strong character - the sum of qualities that defines a person - and a results-driven attitude. Veterans with these attributes are a perfect fit for our agency. Our commitment is to be with you throughout life's journey. Last year, we hired 769 Veterans, including 469 Veterans with disabilities. The Veterans' Preference Act allows us to give preferential treatment in hiring to certain Veterans who were discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions. Through this authority, Veterans may qualify for priority placement over other eligible applicants applying as first-time hires for the federal government. You may also be eligible for non-competitive selection through other special hiring authorities for Veterans, allowing for an expedited process when hiring new employees. Through a partnership with the VA, Veteran employees may be eligible to participate in the VA's GI Bill On-the-Job Training program that provides a stipend, in addition to their salary, while completing on-the-job training.Social Security's support of our Veterans goes beyond the hiring process. We will help you with the application process, and assist you with learning about training, information, benefits, and resources available to you as a new Social Security employee. Our Veterans and Military Affairs Advisory Council serves as an advisory body to the Commissioner of Social Security, executives, and managers on Veterans' issues. The Council also supports our Veteran employees with mentorship, support, and other services, which include a Veterans' employee website with our agency policies, programs, and career resources. You will have access to reasonable accommodations and regular contact with other veteran employees. You can find more information on our website. We are honored and would be privileged to have you among our ranks. For more information, please visit our webpage Opportunities for Veterans.
